Best Holiday Songs

+comment

You know I love a good list, and the last Friday before Christmas is a perfect time.  I’ve made a list of my favorite holiday songs.  Most times, the non-stop Christmas radio station drives me insane.  But for the following songs, there is never a time I’m not happy to hear them.

Enjoy the music!!

1. “All I Want For Christmas is You” - Mariah Carey

I know she’s cheesy. I know this song is overplayed. I don’t care. I love it, and it makes me happy. The only other person allowed to sing it is that adorable girl from Love Actually. I kind of like her version better because, well, she’s not Mariah.  But I still love this song.  Sorry Megan. (Megan has way better taste in music than I do and a Mariah shout-out is probably making her cringe.) Also, let’s remember that this song has a message against the commercialization and consumerism of Christmas! Well, I doubt Mariah epitomizes that, but it makes me feel better for liking it.

2. A Charlie Brown Christmas – Vince Guaraldi Trio “Christmas is Coming”

If this song doesn’t make you want to move around the house or bring a smile to your face, well I’m sorry to tell you, but you’re dead inside.  No boring lyrics, no sappy emotional moments, just joy.  Lots of joy.  It’s so good! And who doesn’t like Charlie, Lucy, Snoopy, Linus and the gang?

3. Adam Sandler’s “Hanukkah Song”

I still love this song. It makes me giggle, and I’m a big fan of things that still make me smile all these years later.  And since I’m never a fan of any kind of monopoly, I was glad there was finely a good Hanukkah song.

4. “Up On the Housetop” – Jackson 5

It’s rare that a Christmas song makes you want to really dance.  Welcome to 70’s remixes.  It’s silly and definitely a Jackson reworking as they talk about each other, but enjoy!

5.  The Nutcracker: Arabian Dance – Tchaikovsky

I’ll nerd out here, but my parents  took us to see The Nutcracker a lot when we were little. Well, okay, they took me last year, and I love it as much now as I did then.  I’ve seen the ballet many times, and it’s never not magical.  When I was in band, we would always play music from “The Nutcracker” at our Christmas concert.  The Arabian Dance is my very favorite. There is something forbidden, mysterious and cool about this song. And how much music ever highlights the oboe? I love the oboe.  My sister played the oboe and often had the solo (which would make her so nervous), and I was always jealous she had a solo in such an awesome song.  I played flute and while we get the melody a lot (thank you Chinese Dance for our solos), I love, love the Arabian Dance.

Honorable mention: “Christmas is for Fuckin’” by Reggie Watts.  It falls under the ‘makes me smile category.’ Yes, it’s NSFW but it is a funky, cool, funny song that is technically about Christmas.
