In Praise of Good Men

1comment

I adore my niece. She’s smart, literate, hilarious and totally unique (how many other ten year old girls choose to go falconing for their birthdays?), but she’s also occasionally socially awkward and is totally physically uncoordinated. Recently, as part of the Presidential Physical Fitness test, her entire fourth grade class had to run a mile. When all the rest of the kids were finished with their mile, my niece still had an entire lap to go. I can only imagine how frustrating and embarrassing that must have been for her, to have to circle the track by herself with everyone watching. And it turned out she didn’t have to. Two boys from her class went back out there and did an extra lap so she wouldn’t have to do it alone. That is so sweet it makes me want to cry.

When my sister told me this story, it got me thinking about all the great guys there are in the world, young and old. On this site we spend a lot of time discussing the many shortcomings of men. It is important, however, to occasionally take some time to discuss and celebrate the wonderful, sensitive, supportive, hilarious, talented and sexy men in the world. Because, despite how it can sometimes feel when you’re single, there are tons of great guys out there. We’ve had a bunch of them as guest authors on this very blog. I happen to be lucky enough to be married to one.

So I want to give a shout out to the two boys who showed such kindness to my niece. Someday, those boys are going to grow up to be awesome men and some girl (or guy) will be lucky to have them.

So if you’re currently single and feeling like there are no good men out there, don’t despair. There are. And no, they are not all taken or gay. Your One is out there.

Have a great story about a great guy? We’d love to hear it. You can post it in the comments section or email us at mail@thezerosbeforetheone.com
