Why Do We Hate Anne Hathaway?

+comment

Yesterday Anne Hathaway was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis.  I know, cue the groans. I’m sure her voicemail is full of top designers wanting to dress her, and the Anne Hathaway promotional train will kick into overdrive. Despite her talent and beauty, most women I know hate her. There are multiple ‘I Hate Anne Hathaway’ facebook pages and a completely separate ‘I Hate Anne Hathaway’ tumblr.  I must admit when I first saw the trailer of her squeaking out a breathy version of “I Dreamed a Dream,” the die-hard Les Mis fan me wanted to punch her in the crotch.  However, I guess I do believe if a broken-spirited, starving woman forced into prostitution was on her deathbed, then maybe belting out a showtune isn’t exactly what she’d be capable of.  Whatever. But if you compare her contemporaries: Kate Hudson, Emily Blunt, Amy Adams, Claire Danes, etc. they don’t garner the same irk as Anne Hathaway.

I was at a dinner party last week and her name came up, and I wanted to know why so many smart, cool women really dislike Anne Hathaway.  (One woman on my US Weekly Fantasy League had a team named “Fuck you, Anne Hathaway”, which she almost named “Fuck you, Catherine Zeta-Jones but she realized she hated Anne a little more.)  Some of my friends blamed her awkward/painful co-hosting duties with James Franco at the 2011 Oscars. Some hated her English accent while others just hated the lace headpiece she wore at her wedding. Even when I reminded them how much I loved her in The Devil Wears Prada, no one was interested.

But why? Realistically Anne is talented (remember Rachel Getting Married) and she can sing.  She isn’t afraid to make fun of herself (see her FunnyorDie spoof with Samuel Jackson), she seems bright, engaging and generally like a nice person.  Why the hate?  In terms of role models for young girls she’s never had a mugshot, there are no TMZ drunken rage episodes, no sex tapes, and besides one douchey/criminal ex-boyfriend, her dating record isn’t too bad… yet, she still annoys the hell out of women?  What’s the deal?

I think it’s because watching Anne Hathaway is like watching someone try really hard.  Too hard.  I don’t think she learned how to play hard to get, in anything.  She reminds me of Patty Simcox from Grease (remember the goody two-shoes cheerleader who wants to be Sandy’s best friend but is really just annoying and dorky?).  While her intentions are good, it’s just too much.  She’s too gushy, too “aw-shucks”, too effusive, almost too humble.  Maybe everyone is just sick of her. She is ridiculously overexposed.  You almost get the feeling she flashed her vag on purpose.

Is she not cool enough? She definitely has a dorky vibe, but so does Zooey Deschanel and she’s “aDORKable.”  Maybe Anne needs to own her fame, own her fabulous life, own her friendship with Valentino and killer wardrobe, and stop trying to be so humble.  Her life is incredible and if she would just own it, it would go a long way.  It is very likely that she’ll win an Oscar.  I recommend she diva up a little bit.  Maybe she should incorporate that Angelina-I-hate-you-face and women would like her, because we are all over watching her try to impress us.
